On 11 November 1918, the same day as the armistice that put an end to World War I, Georges Schaeren founded the Mido Watch Company, then known as Mido G. Scaheren & Co. Schaeren was a highly competent watchmaker, obtaining his diploma in a watchmaking school in Solothurn and worked at various watchmakers up till the founding of his own company. The word mido translates to “to measure” in Spanish - a fitting name for a famed watchmaker. After all, it is the measurement of time that has fascinated men for centuries.

The Baroncelli watch was first introduced in 1976, celebrating the timeless beauty of the Rennes Opera House. Mido drew inspiration from the Opera House’s rounded architecture as well as the statues of the Muses of Antiquity placed on top of the facade. In 2006, to mark the 30th anniversary of the collection, Mido reintroduced the Baroncelli lineup into their collection. The new watches continue to perpetuate the spirit of the line and are inspired by the sublime and timeless aesthetic of stringed instruments.

This year, in 2023, Mido unveiled a brand new model to the Baroncelli lineup. Introducing the Baroncelli Moonphase Chronograph Blue, the timepiece that we are proudly showing off today. The watch that we are looking at today is the blue-dialled chronograph that packs a Moonphase and calendar complications. Made of entirely high polished 316L stainless steel, the Baroncelli Moonphase Chronograph comes in at 42mm in diameter, 50.2mm lug-to-lug and a mere thickness of 13.3 m. The 42mm diameter and apt thickness make the chronograph watch wear extremely well on the wrist. In addition, the lugs curve gently to ensure that the watch sits perfectly on the wrist. The impressive classic case design also ensures that it can pairs well with a formal wear, or a casual outfit easily, which is exactly like how a chronograph watch like this is meant to do so.

The 30m water-resistant watch case is done in full mirror-polishing, and clads the chronograph pushers at its right side while flanging the push-pull crown. The stepped bezel enlightens the wearer with more dial visuals, allowing one to enjoy each of the complication sitting within the sapphire crystal. Flipping the case over there’s a screw-down case-back with a sapphire crystal opening that allows one to see the mechanical works within.

The dial is where the Baroncelli really (moon)shines. Apart from the blue colour hue, the watch comes with multiple dial finishings with three metal trims to segregate the sub-dials from the main. Starting from the external, the outer ring measures our date through a cresent-tip pointer hand, flanging the minute rehaut where applied markers are rested at all the twelve hours positions. And sits within are the sub-dials that pack two amazing mechanical complications. At the bottom is the chronograph 12-hour counter which includes a moonphase. Moving to the sub-dial at 9′o clock keeps the running seconds and a 24-hour timereading. Finally, at the 12’o clock there’s the sub-dial for the chronograph 30-minute counter in which includes the apertures for both day of the week and the month.

A piece of flat sapphire crystal with double-sided anti-reflective coating sits atop the stunning dial, ensuring maximum scratch resistance and legibility in even the harshest lighting conditions. The lack of luminescent material on the watch is also not of concern. After all, who needs lume on an elegant watch like this? 

The Mido Baroncelli features the Mido Caliber 60 which is based on the ETA A05.221. This movement shows not only the hours, minutes and small 60 seconds, but also the chronograph recording hours, minutes and seconds, in tandem the complete calendar display. It runs at a 28,800BPH and has an anti-magnetic Nivachron hairspring. When fully wound the automatic movement holds up to 60 hours of autonomy.

Completing the watch is a textured blue rubber strap that has a curved end with quick-release push pins and a stainless steel tang buckle. The sporty rubber strap tones done certain formality while offering unparalleled comfort due to the small individual links and conforms greatly to the wearer’s wrist. It also further refines the watch, making it a more compelling package overall.

To sum things up, this latest addition to the Mido Baroncelli line is a superb timepiece that oozes class and elegance. The fact that Mido can keep a watch with an automatic moonphase, chronograph and a calendar movement is incredible. Add the fact that the Mido Baroncelli is also very reasonably priced and you have a winning package. It is a watch with great proportions, amazing specifications and complications are displayed, and will definitely leave a smile on our faces.
