Founded by Gottlieb Hauser in 1883, Alpina has been a creative Swiss brand from the early 20th century where they manufactured watch movements and calibers for both the Swiss and the German market. They focus much on rugged tool watches that provide supplies even to the military back then and continuing their legacy till today. They are currently the sister brand of Frederique Constant, whose primary focus is classic watches. Alpina, on the other hand, specializes in sports watches, mainly the Alpiner (Land), Seastrong (Sea) and Startimer (Air) while consistently providing accessible luxury watches. Today, we are proud to be the first to introduce, the all-new Alpiner 4 Glacier Blue in 44mm.
The Alpiner 4 Collection integrates the concept of "4" that served as a base in 1938, when Alpina invented the concept of the Swiss Sports watch.
More than any other watchmaker, Alpina was responsible for the concept of the modern Swiss sports watch, as it is known today. After several patents to ensure water-resistance and following the development of the famous Alpina "Block Uhr" in 1933, in 1938 Alpina presents the "Alpina 4": the first modern Swiss sports watch. The concept behind the "Alpina 4" was to combine the 4 essential features that defined a sports watch, in one single timepiece:
Alpina Alpiner 4 Glacier Blue 44mm Ref. AL-525NS5AQ6
1. Anti-magnetic, 2. Anti-shock, 3. Water-resistant and 4. Stainless
Such had to be a sports watch, in the vision of the Alpina founder Gottlieb Hauser, to be able to tackle the entire vertical Alpine sports environment, from mountain climbing to alpine lake diving. In 2014, Alpina revived the Alpina "4" concept with its new "Alpiner 4" collection, dedicated to the Alpine sports universe.
The Alpina takes on an iconic design with an elegant 2—part antimagnetic case watches from previous 44mm iterations. The watch has current specifications of 44mm, 52.5mm lug-to-lug and 13.15mm thick. Sticking to the classic, the dimensions is reminiscent of past models.
Glacier Blue Dial With Sunray Finishing
Made out of 316L anti-corrosion stainless steel, the case distills a distinctive twisted lugs design while being sharp-looking and feel altogether in a wearable package. Together with its multi-finishings that often punches way above Alpina’s price-point, the overall look is conspicuously multi-layered, faceted with an ultra-modern look in addition to the brand’s spirit in which resonates with the all-rounder sports watch theme. A fitting genuine 22mm burgundy leather strap that tapers to 20mm with contrast white stitching is paired, to elude an elegant stylish aesthetic by further highlighting the colours on the case.
Under the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal lies the eye-catching glacier blue dial. The deviation from the usual horizontal pattern, the dial features a sunray texture with a deep blue. A generous fill of green glow in the dark superluminova across the handset and indices makes this an instantly legible in darkness of sea. The 60min steel bezel with the iconic red logo at the 12'oclock marker allows for key sports time measurement functions. A date display at 3 o’clock further seals the deal of a good daily-beater for its wearer. To finish up, the case is fitted with a screw-down crown with the Alpina signature embossed and a knurling finish to allow for easier grip. The lack of a crown guard accentuates the “big crown” appeal, a signature of premium models.
Superluminova Glows In The Dark
At the heart of the Alpiner 4 lies the Alpina self-winding caliber AL-525 automatic movement that offers a power reserve of 38 hours that beats at a rate of 28,800 beats per hour. This 26 jewel movement is based on the ever-reliable Sellita SW200-1 movement, a movement renowned for its reliability and performance. At the back of the watch, the engraved screw-down case back protects the movement against accidental splashes with a water resistance of 100m (330 ft). > Jun Kai: Alpina has continued to carry their legacy in Swiss watchmaking to produce many well-built watches today based on their heritage designs. The Alpiner 4 packs an unbeatable value with great specifications that ticks all the right boxes for a dependable everyday tool watch ready for your next adventure.
