The Ball Watch Company Engineer Hydrocarbon Racer Chronograph Silver Ref. CM2198C-S1CJ-SL is their latest classic modern Ball watch, bringing perks of being overbuilt, bold, aggressive in style and of course the signature tritium gas tubes that give Ball watches the ability to maintain high visibility through prolonged periods of darkness. Further, the new Hydrocarbon timepiece features a much wearable size at 42mm wide and only 15mm in height, given that it is a chronograph, it is quite a feat.
Before we get to the complication, the watch is water resistant to 100 meters/330ft featuring a screw-down crown, anti-magnetic to 4,800A/m, and shock resistant to 7,500Gs. The watch features a tachymeter bezel.
In total, the timepiece boasts 15 tritium tubes, filled with self-powered tritium gas whose energy is released when the H3 molecules strike the tubes’ internal surfaces. The result is continuous, long-lasting luminosity, up to 25 years without requiring a recharge from any outside light or energy source.
|BALL's Patented Crown Protection|
The bracelet and patented folding buckle & extension system of the Engineer Hydrocarbon Racer Chronograph like the watch can only be described in one word, overbuilt. With brushed outer and polished inner links with screw in links. The double folding clasp is machined out of solid steel and locks in place with authority.
Ball’s obsession with legibility and illumination clearly shown in the dial. The silver dial is simple yet attractive and useful at the same time. Especially appealing for those who seek form follows function. Turn the lights off, and this thing is a different beast altogether. Each hour marker fitted with green tubes while the 12 marker is in double yellow tubes for easy orientation. The sword hands further feature a green tube each, in congruence with the whole watch luminous. This is certainly a watch you can enjoy both in daylight and the dark.
|Ceramic Tachymeter Bezel|
The dial of the Hydrocarbon Racer Chronograph is probably it's highlight. The main dial is finished silverish-white with contrasting black subdials that is snailed creating a sense of depth. Being a Ball, they cannot stop there. The black tachymeter bezel is made from ceramic as well. And than there is a date window at 12 o'clock which is internally magnified. This is what I call, attention to details.
Powering the watch is BALL’s caliber RR1401-C with Chronometer Certification(COSC). The 25 Jewel movement has a 42-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 bph.

Summing things up, the new Ball Watch Company Engineer Hydrocarbon Racer Chronograph Silver Ref. CM2198C-S1CJ-SL caters for seasoned collectors or millennia who are looking for a robust yet unique mechanical Swiss-made watch with a chronograph function. We never stop admiring the details Ball put into every single model of theirs. In this case, the super case finishing, the patented crown guard, the COSC chronograph movement, the tritium tubes, the ceramic tachymeter bezel, the internal date magnifier and the list goes on and on. While we understand this is by no means an affordable watch, but name us another watch with the same specifications and attention to details that is even close to this price. In my opinion, if you are in the market for a chronograph, this is certainly a model you need to shortlist.
