Glycine Combat SUB 42 Vintage Blue Ref. GL0416

Since its founding by Eugène Meylan in 1914, Glycine has been producing watches at its factory in Bienne, Switzerland.

Meylan was an uncompromising watch engineer who strove for perfection and nothing less. He had a profound understanding of both the market demands and the possibilities offered by the technological advances of the time.

Today, offering excellent value at reasonable prices is an important part of Glycine's philosophy. The company's strong foundation, coupled with its emphasis on rugged and reliable products, make Glycine a respected name in Swiss watchmaking today.

Blue "Sandy" Textured Dial with Blue Bezel

Since the early 60s, Glycine has served the market with this line of sturdy and captivating watches, made for exacting conditions of wear and use. The precise automatic and chronograph movements are housed in a high-grade steel case of rugged construction, offering excellent value for money.

Combat watches stand out for their classic design, enduring strength and reliability. All through the years, this line of watches has enjoyed unbroken popularity in military and sport circles.

Since 2019 Fall, The Combat SUB gets a makeover, or should we say, a new finishing method on its case with ode-to-past "explorer" textured dial from the early 60s. Let's welcome the Combat SUB Vintage 42 Blue Ref. GL0416, made from 316L stainless steel. It measures at 42mm and 10.6mm thin for unsurpassed comfort on all wrist sizes. The short lugs to lugs length of 49.5mm together with the unique downward curving lugs meant the watch wraps around the wrist like a pair of gloves.

Unique Curved Lugs for a Comfortable Fit
What are good looks without performance? The large screw-down crown is easy to grip, and screws in and out without any sense of roughness in the screw threads contributed mostly by the larger than usual screw tube.

Entirely hand-finished and Made in Switzerland, the watch is done in a new full-satin finished case, giving the military diver a more personalized feel while staying synonymous with Glycine The 60 clicks unidirectional rotating bezel clicks positively in place with little play for added confidence. The golden markers on the blue bezel insert comes with a gilded red triangle pip at 12 o 'clock, all that conform a hint to the vintage theme.

Further, the Combat Sub is water-resistant to a modest 200m.

Signed Screwdown Crown
The Combat comes with a sapphire crystal with three layers of anti-reflective coating on the underside for added clarity under different lighting conditions. The vintage theme continues onto the dial. The matte blue "sandy" textured dial is comme il faut, featuring painted block with bold Arabic numbers at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions, finishing up with one triangle-shaped hour marker at 12' o'clock. The handset aesthetic kept in the Glycine's diver tradition, along with the hour markers and Arabic numbers filled with the right amount of C3 SuperLuminova for superb glow-in-the-dark. Oh, did we mention the date display at 4 o'clock is done in red to liven things up a little more while matching with the bezel's triangle pip and the "SUB 20 ATM" wordings at 6 o'clock?

It is powered by a Glycine GL224 movement, which is essentially an ETA2824-2/SW200, operating at 28,800 bph (4 Hertz) with hacking and hand winding capabilities. It has 25/26 jewels with a power reserve of 38 hours.

The Combat Sub Vintage comes with a Glycine signed stainless steel bracelet with fliplock push-button clasp.

C3 SuperLuminova

Overall, the Glycine Combat Sub Vintage exhibits an up-to-date tactical diver based on their archive, managing to be at the great value given the history and built of the watch. The contemporary size with unique curved lugs makes this watch ultra-comfortable on many wrists. The unique Glycine looks, the ETA2824-2 movement, the 200m 316L stainless steel diver case with sapphire makes this an exceptional bargain and hard to beat. The Combat Sub fits Glycine's philosophy that Mr. Eugène Meylan set out in 1914
