From a heritage brand like Hamilton, modern re-interpretations of their past retro models has been the direction they are going in many recent releases, reviving them with Swiss watchmaking capabilities of the 21st century. In 2017, Hamilton unveiled the limited edition American Classic Intra-Matic Chrono 68 based on the Hamilton Chronograph B from 1968, a gorgeous release well-received by vintage watch enthusiasts. This time round, the Intra-Matic Chronograph H recaptures the golden age of sports chronographs, bringing back the unparalleled haptic pleasure of a hand-wound timepiece.
The Hamilton Intra-Matic Chronograph Auto White Ref. H38416111 receives a reworked 2-piece 316L stainless steel construction with the bezel integrated into the mid-case, offering a more seamless appearance compared to the former 3-piece construction in previous iterations. While the overall thickness remains relatively unchanged at approximately 14.45mm, this new case construction resulted in a notably slimmer case profile, with the boxed sapphire crystal contributing to the overall height. Nonetheless, the watch sits extremely comfortable on the wrist with a versatile diameter of 40mm and a lug to lug distance of 49.2mm.

Taking visual cues from the Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono, the sleek case design echoes a charming old-school style from the ‘60s with its slim angular lugs and circular construction. The entire case is finished to a high standard with smooth mirror-like polishing all around, bringing an extra flair that amplifies the dressy appeal as it gleams with brilliance under bright lighting.
Distinct oversized pushers and a grippy crown at the right side of the case are the hallmarks of the Intra-Matic Chronograph, allowing for a ton of retro character with a satisfying operation when using the chronograph and winding up the movement. To complete the vintage look, the supplied stainless steel 20mm Milanese mesh bracelet beautifully expresses a sophisticated elegance associated with timepieces from the 70s period, a seemingly perfect style of bracelet to pair with a vintage-inspired chronograph. Secured on the wrist with a polished Hamilton-signed push-button clasp, a mesh bracelet brings a raffish charm that easily compliments a whole range of style from sporty to classy.

The retro charms lie in the white monochromatic “panda” style dial. True to the vintage cue, the Intra-Matic Chronograph White features the symmetric dual register dial configuration, where the running second is read on the left side while balancing off with the 30-minute totalizer on the opposite right side. Both sub-dials did in matte black on a creamy white background with precise snailing done to them to create a certain depth. The Tachymeter scale is then done in black and sits on the periphery inside the case, another nod to its vintage chronograph- the Chrono-Matic. On the 6 o’clock, a black on white background date display sits well without disrupting the symmetry of the watch. Lastly, the 60s applied markers and handset were executed here topping with the latest Superluminova that glows well through the night.
While the vintage chronograph runs on the Valjoux 7730, the latest Intra-Matic powered by the most recent H-31 automatic movement. Based on the Valjoux 7753, the 27 jewels automatic movement have its chronograph function, hand winding, and hacking capabilities and a power reserve of 60 hours at a frequency of 28,800 bph. Further, the date complication not advanced via the central crown, but instead, a quick-set pusher at 10 o’clock does the job of changing the date.
