Introduction: Squale Watch Short History

Squale was founded as a manufacturer of handbags and other components for other watch brands in 1946 by Charles von Büren in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Initially, the "Squale" mark appeared on the watch as a symbol of the case's origin and pride in its quality.

Under the Squale trademark, von Büren S.A./Montres started making their own range of advanced diving watches in 1950. This watch is not marketed for a jewelery shop but a specialty dive shop.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Squale made watch cases for Potens Prima, Altanus Genève, Arlon, Prima Flic, Ocean Diver / Blandford, Jean Perret Geneva, Deman Watch, Margi, Berio, Carlson Tavernier Geneva, Eagle Star Genève, La Spirotechnique, Wertex, and Sinn. 500m waterproof designed cases with a crown located in the "4 o'clock" position are sold to Airin, Dodane, Blancpain, Tag Heuer, Doxa, Zeno, and Auricoste. Squale also supplied paratrooper corps "Folgore Brigade" part of the Italian Air Force ("Aeronautica Militare Italiana") and Italian Navy Diving Corps ("Marina Militare Italiana") with watches during this period.

In 1974, Squale entered the watch market as an independent entity.

Following the watch industry's "quartz crisis", Squale discontinued their mechanical watch production to focus on quartz watches in 1989. This led to the "Squale Rambo" production. Like many watch companies at the time, Squale was starting to disappear from the international watch market.

The company was bought by the Maggi Family, relatives of the von Büren family and former distributor of von Büren / Squale watches in Italy after Charles von Büren retired. The brand was launched back in 2010 and is now headquartered in Milan, with watches made in Grenchen in the Jura valley, Switzerland.

Below are Gnomon's best collections for Squale in 2020.

Squale 50 ATMOS Luminoso

Since the 1960s, the Squale 50 ATMOS has probably been the flagship model, securing its place to be one of Squale's most emblematic dive watches to date. Many dive watch enthusiasts admit that Squale has made this tropical dive watch box for brands such as Aquastar, Doxa, and Blancpain, to name a few. Today, Squale continues to update this iconic dive watch for collectors, allowing a great deal of enjoyment in the possession of the original design, which is synonymous with the Squale brand.

In recent years there have been several improvements in casing construction and finish through the use of modern machinery and technology. However, the classic skin-diver look from their archive remains the same, giving watch enthusiasts a lot of enjoyment from a retro-vibe watch, rugged and reliable. It's the same as ATMOS's new retro Squale 50 Luminoso Ref.1521.

The Squale 50 ATMOS Luminoso is, as its name implies, the opposite style of glowing in the dark on a typical dive watch. Instead of just having the handset and clock plot turned on, now don't, while the whole dial will get the job done. This is a fully luminous dial that was popular in the early 90's.

In addition, the iconic skin-diver watch 50 ATMOS has been a staple model from then, in the 1960s and 70s. Many dive watch enthusiasts admit that Squale has made this tropical dive watch box for brands such as Aquastar, Doxa, and Blancpain, to name a few. Today, Squale continues to appear without many changes to the originals for collectors, allowing a great deal of enjoyment in the possession of a unique design, synonymous with the Squale brand.

With 41 mm wide and 48 mm lugs on the lugs, the dimensions of the Luminoso Squale 50 ATMOS case remain valid, identical to the Squale 50 Atmos Blue. It boasts 500m water resistance without the use of conventional Helium escapement valves due to its unique casing design. The unique case construction also means that the 500m watch can be made with a slim 12.5mm size.

The contemporary footprint means that the ATMOS 50 is very comfortable on the wrist. Topping it off, a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating for added toughness and clarity. The philosophy of staying "true-to-original" gives watch enthusiasts more enjoyment than retro-ness.

To its unique retro dial that brings the highlight of the watch. The whole has a complete Superluminova applied on top, in stark contrast to the darkened handset and the clock plot with a splash of orange marker painted at the 12.6 and 9'o o'clock positions, which provide better orientation for the wearer. Once fully lit in the dark, it has as good legibility as a conventional dive watch, thanks to a contrasting marker and handset.

Made in Switzerland and powered by ETA's automatic caliber, ETA2824-2, which operates at a speed of 28,800 bph (4 Hertz) with both hacking and hand rolling capability. It has 25 gems with a power reserve of 38 hours.

ATMOS Squale 50 comes with the latest Tropic-style rubber straps, while we still provide buyers with the choice of vintage leather and Milanese Squale mesh bracelets. You can find out more about the different characteristics of the various straps here.

Squale 30 ATMOS Blue/Red GMT Ceramica - SEL Bracelet

From producing watches and watch cases for many Swiss brands in the past to creating their own range of professional dive watches in the 50s, Squale is known internationally for their high quality divers. This Swiss watchmaker has been setting the standard for decades, supplying fine watches for numerous brands and the formidable Swiss armed forces, including the Folgore Brigade, which consists of battalions of parachutists that are part of the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare Italiana) and the Force. Italian Sea. Diving Corps, also known as Marina Militare Italiana.

After more than 60 years of crafting the beautiful watches that have rocked the watch industry, Squale is making a colorful comeback after last year's 60th Anniversary Edition 30 Atmos with last year's much-loved diver's 30 Atmos GMT edition, this time featuring two colors. blue and red ceramic bezel. Squale 30 Atmos GMT is back and will always be FIN-tastic!

Made in Switzerland, the Squale 30 Atmos GMT Blue / Red Ceramica - SEL bracelet is powered by a Swiss Made ETA 2893-2 / Sellita SW330-1 automatic movement with a GMT function and a quickset date. This timepiece is made with the coveted GMT feature indicated by an additional red GMT hand on the basis of a vintage diver model created by Squale in the 1960s.

Measuring 42mm in diameter, Squale 30 Atmos GMT is 13mm high. Paired with short lugs up to 49 mm lug lengths, this timepiece is made with lugs that curve downward for a comfortable fit on most wrist sizes. The watch also features a large screw knob which operates smoothly because the threaded tube is larger than normal which allows for a water resistance of 300 m.

What sets this watch apart is the two-tone ceramic bezel, impressive and complex features crafted to perfection by Squale. The process for making this ceramic bezel follows two steps. First, the ceramic is cut into shapes and a specially made machine for this purpose engraves the numbers perfectly onto the ceramic bezel. The engraved bezel is then heated to 1500 degrees Celsius to harden and purify the ceramic, ensuring its permanent color and allowing for increased scratch resistance that maintains its shiny new sheen for years.

The bi-tone bezel stays true to the classic GMT color of the navy blue top and the red underside red. Adding to the allure of this one-way 120-click bezel, the ceramic material used exudes a shimmery appearance, mimicking the handsome Bakelite bezel effect typically forged on vintage dive watches. Normally, I would say that a picture speaks a thousand words, but they really don't live up to the greatness of Squale 30 Atmos GMT.

Nostalgia oozes from the Squale 30 Atmos GMT with a faithful continuation of some of the features that have characterized the 1545 series such as the unique Squale handset design and the minimalist dial format. The timepiece features a sunburst black dial fitted with vintage-style hour markers and a handset that has been synonymous with Squale dive watches for decades.

The markers and applied handset are also painted with Super-LumiNova that glows green in the dark. In addition, the dial of this watch is protected by a flat sapphire crystal. Lined with anti-reflective interior for better clarity, this crystal also has a 2.5x magnifying glass throughout the date look.

Fully designed and handcrafted in Switzerland, this watch features a satin-brushed top and highly polished sides, trademarks of the Squale watch. In addition, the transition between this watch's brushed and polished pieces is well-defined, marking it a masterpiece of Squale.

The Squale 30 Atmos GMT comes with a satin-plated metal bracelet with a solid end and threaded connection. This sleek bracelet also has a diver's extension, making the watch the perfect companion for any type of underwater adventure.

Taking on some of the popular 30 Atmos models that were sold out, the Squale 30 Atmos GMT Blue / Red Ceramica - SEL Bracelet combines modern manufacturing techniques with timeless 60s vintage design. The search for a reliable GMT timepiece is complemented by this beautiful timepiece that is sure to serve watch collectors from all walks of life. Flaunting masculine charm with the solid feel attributed to the 316L stainless steel case and band, this watch is matched with the highest quality, as one would expect from a Squale watch, as well as an outstanding cost-performance ratio.

Squale 30 Atmos GMT Blue / Red Ceramica - SEL Bracelet is available on Gnomon store.

Squale 60 ATMOS - Squalematic Satin Black/Orange - 6045/SATBLKORG

A redesign of the original Squalematic Diver from the '70s is the Squale Squalematic 60 ATMOS watch.

The matte black dial is nostalgic yet charming to look at. The beautiful dial features a multi-faceted matte steel marker for those who prefer a softer look. With Superluminova applied to the tip of the steelmaker for outstanding low light visibility.

The bezel is clocked tight and it clicks positive. The highlight of the bezel is an elegant bakelite inlay placed on the bakelite with a multi-faceted steel marker. This look comes from a diver's watch that Squale made in the 1970s.

Made in exactly the same method. A squale used in the past, bezel inlay adds a hint of nostalgia to Squalematic. The bakelite bezel setup is colored in a multi-stage process. First the multi-faceted metal pie is applied by hand, followed by staining with a varnish that is resistant to seawater corrosion, and then it is applied to the supporting steel substrate. This ensures that the components are warm to the touch while ensuring excellent bevel readability thanks to transparency.

For easy repair, the bezel can be loosened and removed by loosening the 4 screws on the side of the bezel. Squalematic uses dual domed sapphire crystals with an anti-reflective treatment for added clarity.

The 44mm spotless steel case is satin finished and has the same iconic case shape as the Squale.

This time, the Squalematic diver comes with a dark brown leather strap that matches the perforation for added air circulation and comfort.

The Squalematic 60 ATMOS is certainly a classic diver's watch that is going to stand the test of time in the making.

Squale 30 ATMOS Arancia-Zurro - Gnomon Exclusive

For Neuchatel's Maison- Squale, the diver-oriented Swiss dive watch specialist named by the Von Buren family who created the company, 2019 is a significant milestone. Today, the dive box manufacturer turns 60 this year. To celebrate, the brand released an extraordinary edition of their beloved 30 Atmos dive watch and previously launched a limited edition of only 150 pieces - a special edition 60th anniversary. It's not just a matter of reworking with lots of vintage touches but based on the designs of the first models produced in the 60's.

Right now, for those who missed the limited edition and are eager to get one, this is your lucky day. Gnomon would like to present you with Squale 30 Atmos Arancia-Zurro, the newest exclusive version. Manufactured in limited numbers, this orange and blue bezel diver is set to become more than just a favorite among Squale fans, but a celebration of how far Squale itself has come. While the dive watch brand is revisiting this classic design, with a certain Italian flair - a playful color ceiling set tucked into a bezel and a quirky two-tone dial, now, let's take a closer look at how Squale continues their diamond celebration.

Mentioned above, Squale 30 Atmos Arancia-Zurro, comes from a unique burnt orange and dark blue frame, which reflects summer in Milan, where Squale Headquarters is located. The DNA of the '60s case remains true to the inspiration for the first dive watch model made by Charles von Büren in Neuchâtel, Switzerland - more than it seems.

Everyone who loves diving watches will remember that this watch brand has supplied some of the most famous watch companies in the world. 30 Atmos is BP's legendary 1960s Bathyscaphe diver award Fifty Fathoms wearing a Squale case, during the time of Swiss watchmaker Rayville.

Bathyscaphe, the name comes from the submarine cabin used by divers to the deep sea.

The original was inspired by a famous Swiss explorer named Jacques Piccard, who descended on the Marianas Trench during the 60s at the Bathyscaphe Trieste with another colleague, Don Walsh.

As such, Bathyscaphe has one of the most critical dive watch designs in history, and Squale's involvement makes it possible.

This signature 60s style gesture is seen in the new modern tribute, measuring from 35mm to 40.8mm (including bezel) wide diver with distinctive sharp lugs design with 300m water-resistance. Don't let the muscular lug design scare you off, 30 Atmos is slim at 12mm high thanks to the unique case construction. It bears a slim (39mm wide) mid-case, like the first design.

Starting from the ode-to-past bezel material, it uses a unique crystal glass insert that mimics the bakelite material of that era, with a precise 15-minute vintage indicator. Furthermore, the bezel grooves are precise for the type, thin and complex, yet comfortable to rotate. The unique design features a satin-plated center that lifts the bezel from the middle case, giving it the authentic look of most dive watches.

Not forgetting the two different color schemes of funky and easy-to-love inserts. While it may seem out of place, it doesn't have a GMT function, but the summer two-tone bezels are no coincidence. Squale repeats this idea from the famous 60 Atmos Squalematic Blue Ref. 6045 / BLU bezel aesthetics while retaining the original marker - only 5 minutes for a clean, sterile look.

Now on to the center box, it has bold masculine lugs featuring some bevelling, done in a full polish that features Squale manufacturing traits. Plus, it produces a pretty retro-ish look. Despite the thick lugs they narrow to the center of the watch, the total lug dimensions to 48.5 mm lugs yield a well-balanced arc of pulp for many of us on the wrist. Finish with a completely accurate sterile "big crown" at 3 o'clock for quiet timing.

Oh, we also know that this particular case is sure to inspire the following Reference. 1521. 50 Atmos case design after, as they both have a similar middle case style.

We have a dark blue dial on the dial side which gets the matte effect seen on the Oris Sixty-FIve diver. It depends on how the light hits the dial surface, which in dim lighting shows an almost black sound - and the wearer earns a retro dive watch tricolor.

A set of nostalgic 60s "maxi" marker layouts all crafted in old radium lumes to match the retro theme, where they glow even more green in the dark. It's finally paired with a pencil-shaped handset and arrow second hand, in the same old radium notes. Squale's iconic shark logo further enhances the vintage gesture at 6 o'clock with the custom "30 Atmos" font. Owners can enjoy the whole 60s vibe of reading the time through the box-shaped crystals made of acrylic material for durability while imitating the nostalgic Plexi crystals found in its predecessors.

Another factor worth mentioning is the unique back case design. Squale designed a unique ring lock system, in which the back of the case is secured with a metal ring threaded around the edge. This lock system was an ingenious design in the early 60's at that time before adapting to the inventions provided of the rubber O-ring seal and screwed case-bock combo.

The Squale 30 Atmos Arancia-Zurro features a proper stepped case-back design (while having a more efficient screw-in design now), with an exact 60s throwback engraving of its Squale emblem in the center. With this original remake of the case-back, for us today, it's a huge throwback to the authentic dive watch construction of the past.

Beats in automatic Swiss caliber - Automatic Sellita SW 200 "REGLAGE ELABORÉ".

Squale 30 Atmos Arancia-Zurro comes with 2 bits of full-stitched, handmade Italian leather strap in mocha brown. The result is a nice twist by Squale to have a backward-looking vibe that is excellent for a dive watch like this whose design is heavily based on the past.

This is a mark of Squale's accomplishment over the past 60 years, an authentic tribute to its roots as a well-known reliable supplier of its dive time instruments, proudly even today, to us watching nerds. The Squale 30 Atmos Arancia-Zurro demonstrates what Squale has achieved once again in its craft, blending its historic dive watch ethos with lots of funkin and retro styles.

It is surely a valuable collection for those who enjoy luxury. Get Squale 30 Atmos Arancia-Zurro on Gnomon store now.

Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue

Holding a deep and rich history in diving watches, Squale has demonstrated excellence in producing high quality dive watches that are built for the task. From watch factories to many top Swiss watch brands such as Tag Heuer, Doxa and Blancpain to supplying timepieces to the Italian Naval Dive Corps, Squale has truly embodied the connection between their devotion to horology and true diving enthusiasts.

The squale watch was sought after for its timeless style and appealing specifications by watch lovers and watch divers. Paying homage to their legacy, Squale unveils a stunning new collection to the 30th ATMOS lineup - The Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue Given the many elements of Squale's vintage dive watch, it's a piece that is sure to touch the hearts of those looking for a design that throws back to the 60's.

Despite its vintage-inspired design, the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue case has been upgraded to a contemporary and simple size. With a case diameter of 39mm (40.8mm when included with the bezel), it fits perfectly into any wrist size compared to the 35mm case used in that era, which is considered small by today's standards.

Looking at the side profile of the case, the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue features a distinctive sharp lug synonymous with the Squale shell produced for the legendary Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe in the 1960s - One of the most prominent watch designs in dive watch history inspiring many. This watch leans towards the more trendy end of the divewatch spectrum in combination with a thin case that is just 12mm wide.

Done with a fully polished finish and intricate bevelling of the lugs, the case finish is extremely well executed, adding a luxurious character to the tool watch. At 3 o'clock, the large screw knob matches the retro design without the crown guard, which makes timing a pleasant experience. In closing, the crown is tastefully marked with the Von Büren logo, a mark of the prominent family that founded Squale.

As a diver's watch, the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue features a 120-click stainless steel bezel. The choice of using traditional stainless steel provides a sturdy vibe, less likely to crack compared to traditional materials such as Bakelite. For improved visibility, the etched numbers and markers are painted black in addition to the satin brush finish on the bezel.

Undoubtedly, the main attraction of the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue lies in the dazzling blue sunburst dial, which is a pleasure to look at when capturing light from different angles. The dark blue sunburst button matches the contrasting stainless steel bezel, making it stand out even more. Additionally, the watch features a pie-pan dial, which tilts gently on the outer edge of the dial, adding another layer of dimension to the piece that takes it to a whole new level. Protecting the dial is a square piece of sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the bottom, mimicking the domed acrylic crystal feel used in the past while providing superior scratch resistance.

The dial uses a maxi index in line with the retro style, reminiscent of many of the dive watches common between the 60s and 70s. Unique hand shaped arrows and indexes are generously treated with Superluminova lume for a bright green punch in dark lighting conditions. The font used for the Squale logo at the 12 o'clock location is another aspect that makes the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue truly unique. The bubbly style logo is a throwback from the logo used in previous versions of the Squale watch, paying tribute to them. The addition of the "super" text printed at the 6 o'clock position is another nod to the 30th ATMOS Super Squale of the 1960s released for the Italian market.

At the heart of the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue is the Swiss-made Sellita SW 200 “REGLAGE ELABORÉ” 26 jewel automatic movement. A pulse rate of 4 Hz (28,800BPH), provides mechanical reliability and is further regulated by Squale for greater accuracy with a +/- 5 tolerance seconds per day.

The Squale comes with a 20mm Italian tropical rubber strap which is made with high quality rubber made for strength and durability. It is designed to have a continuous airflow that keeps skin dry and doesn't have a strong impact on the ergonomics of the strap itself. The material used in the straps is specially designed to resist salt corrosion and UV rays.

In short, the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue features a timeless and classic design true to Squale's strong heritage. While vintage-inspired watches have grown in popularity in recent years, this new release will be a piece that is sure to stand out from the cramp.
