10 Best Dive Watches for Your Collection for Every Budget

Dive watch is a versatile choice that wins everyone's heart in buying a timepiece. Find out the best dive watches for every budget here!
Apr 25, 2024

Throughout my whole journey delving into the watchmaking industry, a dive watch is the most common and loveable watch type in the community. A dive watch itself is primarily a tool watch designed to meet certain needs. It helps anyone who enjoys diving activities to track time while diving, such as checking how long they’ve been underwater.

Serving as a tool watch, diving timepieces were originally designed for military purposes and commercial divers. No wonder that if we take a step back, it’s quite uncommon to wear such a timepiece in the deep ocean – especially considering the tiny working gears and springs inside. Yet, the watchmaking industry always strives to go beyond the common norms, and, now, we can enjoy impressive dive watches while doing underwater activities.

The story of diving timepieces can be traced back to 1927 when Rolex introduced its Oyster as the first water-resistant timepiece. Following the pursuit, Panerai also debuted its Radiomir for the Italian Royal Navy divers in the late 1930s. Long story short, modern dive watches as can be seen nowadays become exceptionally popular.

Many watch brands introduce their best version of diving timepieces with upgraded features and unique designs. The basic requirement in the past versions is also elevated, such as higher water resistance, better legibility, and tougher case. That shift somehow brings the dive watch from a basic tool watch to a recreational timepiece.

The reality shows that a dive watch is mostly used as a statement to complete someone’s style rather than just a tool watch. That is basically just fine as the dive watch is still here, staying faithful to its traditional concept but evolving with the current need and purpose.

What Should You Know About Dive Watches

As a fundamental guideline, dive watches should possess certain requirements to acquire the title. In these present days, many watches are equipped with the good capability to operate underwater. Therefore the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) makes some standards for a dive watch.

The modern ISO 6425 established some criteria, such as good legibility in total darkness along with the markers, a minimum water resistance of 100m, and a unidirectional bezel with markers (at least every 5 minutes). That said, a reliable dive watch is the one that should have those requirements at the very least.
