Squale has always been a name deeply tied to the golden age of dive watchmaking, and the Corallo collection stands as one of its hidden treasures. Introduced in the vibrant 1980s, the Corallo reflected a time when dive watches began to transcend pure utility and become icons of style and adventure. With its compact dimensions, distinctive rounded bezel inspired by the natural curves of coral, and a seamless blend of functionality and elegance, the Corallo captured the optimism and boldness of a generation. Offered initially in time-only models across 28mm, 34mm, and 36mm case sizes, and later expanded into a chronograph variant, the original Corallo series became a trusted companion for divers, travelers, and dreamers who wanted a watch as versatile as their lifestyles.
Today, Squale brings that spirit back to life in the most authentic way possible. Hidden away for decades, 300 original NOS Corallo cases were rediscovered in the brand's archives, untouched and waiting for a second chapter. With deep respect for the original design and the craftsmanship of the era, Squale has carefully reimagined the Corallo for the modern collector. Enhanced with contemporary materials and safety innovations, the new Corallo 2008 is a true bridge between past and present — a rare chance to wear a genuine piece of horological history with modern-day reliability. The name "2008" proudly references the original production number, still engraved on the case back, connecting today's enthusiasts directly to the legacy of Squale's golden years.
The rediscovered cases reflect the classic proportions of their era, yet feel remarkably contemporary even today. Measuring 36.8mm in diameter, 10.5mm thick, and 44mm lug-to-lug, each case proudly bears its original serial number, engraved by MRP SA on the left side of the mid-case. Crafted from robust 316L stainless steel and finished entirely with a fine brushed surface, the Corallo 2008 preserves the authentic character and spirit of the original design. To meet modern standards of durability and performance, Squale has upgraded the gaskets throughout the watch, ensuring enhanced water resistance and long-term reliability. The screw-in crown further bolsters the watch's water resistance, all while staying true to the vintage soul that makes the Corallo so special.
Built to perform as beautifully as it looks, the Corallo 2008 offers a water resistance of 200 meters, ready for both everyday wear and true underwater adventures. Protecting the dial is a domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, adding both durability and vintage charm. True to the original spirit, the monodirectional bezel structure has been carefully preserved, while the aluminum insert has been reimagined with a fresh two-tone design. Treated with SuperLuminova on the numerals and markers, the two-tone bezel not only enhances legibility in low light but also perfectly complements the newly reinterpreted dial, bringing a vibrant and unmistakable character to this modern revival.
The black dial is a masterclass in clarity and legibility, with applied indexes and printed minute markers in white, delivering a clean, functional look. The baton hands, with the minute hand outlined in red, provide a striking contrast, ensuring excellent readability in all conditions. The date window at 3 o'clock adds a practical touch without disrupting the dial's balanced aesthetic. Both the indexes and hands are generously applied with SuperLuminova, ensuring that the watch remains as functional in the dark as it is in daylight.
Under the screw-in caseback lies the beating heart of the Corallo 2008: the historical ETA 2892/A2 automatic caliber. With a diameter of 25.60mm and an ultra-slim thickness of just 3.60mm, this movement is renowned for its reliability and precision, offering an ideal balance of performance and elegance. Its reduced dimensions make it the perfect companion for a sleek diver watch, allowing the Corallo to maintain its refined profile. With a power reserve of 42 hours, 21 jewels, and a beat rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz), the ETA 2892/A2 ensures accurate timekeeping while respecting the vintage character of the watch.
These limited pieces of the Corallo 2008 Black, part of this limited edition release, will be paired with a black perforated rubber strap by Bonetto Cinturini, crafted in Italy.
