The Seiko Prospex Samurai PADI Ref. SBDY135 marks the latest chapter in the Samurai's story, offering a modern interpretation of the iconic diver that first appeared in 2004. Within Seiko's catalog, the Prospex name—short for "Professional Specification"—signifies timepieces built to exacting standards, ready for professional use in demanding conditions. The Samurai holds a special place in Seiko's dive watch history. Though the original models from 2004 to 2008 had a relatively short production run, they quickly gained cult status among collectors, with surviving examples becoming increasingly rare. Recognizing this legacy, Seiko revived the Samurai line in 2017 with the well-received Prospex SBDY019, reigniting interest in the bold, angular diver.

Now, the SBDY135 continues that momentum as a special edition created in partnership with PADI, the world's largest diving organization. More than a design collaboration, this watch celebrates the shared spirit of ocean exploration and preservation. With PADI's global network of 6,600 dive centers and resorts, and over 128,000 professional members across 186 countries and territories, the organization represents the heart of diving culture worldwide. By joining forces once again, Seiko and PADI strengthen a partnership that not only honors the oceans but also provides divers with reliable, purpose-built tools—embodied here in the dark, angular lines of the new Samurai.

Before we get started, with much request since we introduced Seiko JDMs, we decided to bring in the MADE IN JAPAN Turtles meant for the Japanese Domestic Market, denoted by the "J" in the reference number and the "MADE IN JAPAN" at 6 on the dial. The Prospex SBDY135 is a never seen before design within its samurai armour. The difference might be subtle, but this means a lot for Seiko collectors.

The overall look of the Samurai is one of a kind, quirky and unique given its unusual case silhouette. Powered by Seiko's automatic caliber, 4R35, operating at 21,600 BPH (3 Hertz) with hacking and hand winding capabilities. It has 23 jewels with a power reserve of 40 hours.

The 200m water resistant stainless steel case measure 41.7mm case without the crown, but has a lug to lug length of only 49.5mm, and a height of about 12.3mm; along a lug width of 20mm. The smaller profile comparing to past Samurai models make this more versatile watch for all wrist types. The short angled lugs to lugs length means this watch wraps around the wrist on all wrist sizes like a glove making it extremely comfortable.

Notably, as of the "crown" of the Samurai, the subtle green bezel with the contrasting Seiko's large printed markings on it in white colour, with the first crucial 15 minutes featuring a more detailed minute marker. The bezel's grooves are distinctive with intricate knurling, allowing better grip and rotates buttery smooth into 120 positions has little to no free play in a clockwise direction. Sitting atop of the case is Seiko iconic Hardlex crystal.

Mixture of refined satin-brush finish on the surface and Seiko high polishing on the back of the watch, giving it a somewhat premium tool watch feel. The crown, fitted with crown guards, features a unique cross-hatched knurling at three o'clock is easy for time-setting. Turning to the back, the screw-down caseback ensures 200 meters of water resistance and carries Seiko's iconic tsunami emblem, a hallmark of the brand's dive watches. It also bears the "SPECIAL EDITION" inscription, highlighting this model's exclusivity and its PADI partnership in support of ocean conservation. Practicality is further enhanced with drilled lugs, allowing easy strap changes to suit different adventures.

Sporting a beautiful emerald green gradient dial, the design of this Prospex is inspired by the way light pours through water and dances across the rippling surface when viewed from underwater. The white hour markers and sword hands are kept with the classic Samurai's design, and each individually applied with Seiko's Lumibrite that glows ever-so brightly in the dark. The dial also features a small date complication at the 4.30 mark. The vibrant dial and thoughtful details make this watch versatile, allowing it to complement any outfit and suit a wide range of occasions.
