Prospex 200M Sumo Gradient Blue Sapphire 3rd Gen Ref. SBDC175

The nickname Sumo was initially not the official name of this Prospex series of watches. Yet somehow the name stuck and is now acknowledged by Seiko itself. The name’s origins could be explained by some theories. The first theory is that of the robust, oversized countenance of the watch together with a thin 20mm bracelet. The second explanation lies in how the 12 o’clock marker looks like a Mawashi, the underwear donned by Japanese sumo wrestlers during a match. The third explanation lies in how the bezel’s shape is akin to the Dohyo or ring where Sumo takes place.

The Seiko Sumo was launched in 2007 under the reference Prospex Diver 200m SBDC031 as a mid-range offer, above the entry-level Turtle and Samurai. This year once again in 2022, Seiko has added more high-end materials to its latest edition. Today we introduce the Seiko Prospex 200m Sumo Gradient Blue Sapphire 3rd Gen Ref.  SBDC175. 

New Seiko Calibre 6R35 With 70 Hours Power Reserve

The SBDC175 has a 45mm diameter, a 12.9mm height and an unmistakable lug-to-lug measurement of over 52mm. Yet despite its relative oversize compared to other watch series of the Seiko brand, this timepiece remains a comfortable watch to have on the wrist. The watch retains its overall form, with twisted lugs, undulating profile, as well as alternating polished bevels and brushed lines. The 4 o’clock crown remains, rendering this dive timepiece nostalgic for owners of its predecessors. Also unscathed are the sapphire crystal, screw-down caseback and crown and 200m water-resistance. The bezel also boasts a ceramic insert with a revamped 60-minute scale. The Sumo  SBDC175 with an appealing  blue dial reminiscent of the deep blue colour of the ocean is now bedecked with a flat and glossy blue insert.

Furthermore, the trademark markers and hands that have been featured as part of the watch design since 2007 remain. The distinctive “Sumo Belt” index at 12 o’clock is still intact with the shape of the handset. Lumibrite generously coats all the watch elements, with a small luminous marker next to an unframed date window. The dial now boasts a gradient effect over a blue background and enjoys a discreet horizontal wave pattern. The movement remains the same as before with a 3Hz and 70-hour automatic calibre 6R35. The redesigned 3-link bracelet is now entirely brushed and showcases a novel, robust folding clasp with secure lock, push-button release and wetsuit extension.
