Tracing the history of Japanese watchmaking leads right back to 1913 when Seiko created its very first timepiece, followed 50 years later by the birth of the Seiko 5 in 1963. Over its long journey, the Seiko 5 family earned the respect, affection, and loyalty of young enthusiasts across the globe. Today, Seiko 5 Sports brings back the active and innovative spirit of that era. The series built its entire identity on five defining pillars: an automatic self-winding calibre, reliable water resistance, a unified day date display, a comfortable recessed crown, and a sturdy case construction. It remains a legendary recipe for value and daily durability.
For decades, the Seiko 5 Sports family and the legendary SKX dive line gave watch enthusiasts an accessible gateway into real mechanical horology without breaking the bank, capturing hearts globally ever since 1963. When Seiko decided to phase out those traditional SKX sports models, it sent shockwaves through the community and left fans feeling rather anxious about the future. Thankfully, the Seiko 5 Sports legacy has made a triumphant return, packing meaningful modern upgrades while preserving the rugged design DNA we fell in love with. The modern lineup has expanded into a wonderfully diverse collection, and with this latest drop, Seiko is even reviving the spirit of the quirky old SNZH design, giving it a fresh and distinctive new personality.

Gilt printed scale markings in gold define the character of the rotating bezel, lending an elevated retro look to the housing. Operating with buttery smooth precision, the 120 click unidirectional mechanism exhibits minimal free play in a clockwise direction, locking into place with satisfying stability. Shielding the front display, the Hardlex glass sits seamlessly atop the bezel structure. The stainless steel case architecture showcases a alternating combination of satin brushed facets and high polish along the sides, creating intentional contrast that highlights the refined silhouette under varying light conditions.

This time we got a green dial derived from its predecessor, but now with some aesthetic tweaks featuring a sunray brushed texture starting from the middle of the dial, giving great visual depth. The Seiko 5 logo at 12 o'clock is then balanced off symmetrically with the bottom Seiko Sumo style Automatic font instead of the old sports text. The large SKX heirloom indices stay home and make reading easy as they have always done, and so do the classic Seiko hour and minute hands that are outlined in rose gold. The hour markers are now surrounded with rose gold metal trims, and the hands are both generously coated with Seiko LumiBrite, allowing them to glow brightly in the dark for hours.
Features an open back and now powered by Seiko's automatic caliber, 4R36, operating at 21,600 BPH (3 Hertz) with hacking and hand winding capabilities. It has 24 jewels with a power reserve of 40 hours. This is a major upgrade from the previous 7S26 non-hacking and winding caliber that used for the old SKX007J1. You know what, since this JDM model features the day/date display, one can self-select the day display to Japanese kanji characters, or in English.
