Ever since 1968, the Seiko 5 Sports range has anchored accessible mechanical watchmaking, gaining fresh momentum following its major reboot in 2019. From dual time GMT models to rugged field watch layouts, the collection continues to thrive through bold partnerships. The newest addition expands the Field Series by teaming up with Honda to mark the 45th anniversary of the cult classic Motocompo folding scooter. The reference HDB010 limited edition embraces this pop culture icon directly, sporting a retro yellow color scheme encased in a stealthy dark finished housing.
A bit on the Motocompo, it remains a significant Japanese creation. Released by Honda in 1981, the Motocompo had a compact, lightweight body with a dry weight of 42 kg, powered by a 49 cc, 25 horsepower two stroke engine, and was equipped with foldable handlebars and footrests, as well as leak proof mechanisms for fuel, engine oil, and the battery. The idea was that it could easily be folded and loaded into boot spaces, creating a new six wheeled lifestyle that combined the comfort of a four wheeler with the manoeuvrability of a two wheeler by allowing it to be stored in the trunk of the City car, revealed at the exact same time as the Motocompo. While not a fast machine, it delivered immense fun and an exceptionally distinctive design.

Seiko 5 Sports “Field Series” Motocompo - Ltd Ed 8000pcs Ref. HDB010J |
Seiko hit the nail on the head with this new release, delivering a perfectly sized tool watch that finds an ideal balance between traditional dimensions and a modern look. The attractive proportions of the Seiko 5 Sports Field Series will definitely satisfy most wrist sizes, measuring with a compact case diameter of 36.4mm, a lug to lug distance of 44.4mm, and a case thickness of 12.5mm. Constructed out of 316L stainless steel finished with a matte black hard coating, its sleek full black profile allows the vibrant yellow dial to pop out as the unquestioned main character.
Despite having a simple push pull crown at the 3 oclock position featuring the word "TURN" inspired directly by the design of the Honda fuel cock, the watch achieves an astonishing water resistance rating of 100m or 10 ATM. This provides a worry free experience on the wrist with ample protection against sudden water splashes and daily exposure.

Striking yellow colour of the Motocompo |
Underneath Seikos proprietary domed Hardlex crystal, the striking yellow colour of the Motocompo is applied across the dial face, carrying many similar traits from its predecessor such as the dashing red tipped second hand. Integrating raised Arabic markers here wonderfully lifts the dial up to another level of depth, pairing incredibly well with prominent lume plots at every 5 minute interval. Naturally, Seiko delivered their famous LumiBrite luminescent treatment on its brushed pencil style hands for an excellent green glow in the dark. With the Honda logo emblazoned along the black section that cuts across the center, the "Automatic" lettering at 6 oclock features a special font inspired directly by the original Motocompo logo.
The Seiko 5 Sports "Field Series" runs on the ever reliable Seiko's in-house caliber 4R36 automatic movement. This long awaited upgrade features hacking and hand-winding capabilities, which were lacking in the previous generation caliber 7S26 movement which were lacking in these aspects. The 24 jewel movement has a beat rate of 21,600 beats per hour with a power reserve of about 40 hours. Additionally, the movement houses a date and day calendar at the 3 o'clock position printed with crisp white text against a black background, seamlessly matching against the dial. As a feature unique to this limited edition model, the case back in red is marked with the silhouette of the Motocompo, the words Limited Edition, and an individual serial number.

Seiko's 4R36 automatic caliber |
Every inch of the 18mm grey nylon strap references the functional cargo tie down system used to transport the Motocompo in a car boot. Highlighting this industrial heritage, the fabric displays prominent "MOTOCOMPO" lettering alongside utility text callouts, featuring "CARRYING POINT" at the loops and "INSERTION POINT" near the tip. Fitted with a black hard coated pin buckle, the strap delivers durable everyday comfort while maintaining a sleek tactical look.

Released as a limited edition of 8000 pieces worldwide, HDB010J represents a compelling proposition for watch enthusiasts.
