Since its introduction in 1968, the Seiko 5 Sports collection has always stood for durability and precision, but its 2019 reboot truly injected a youthful vibrancy into that decades-old legacy. Along the way, the lineup has grown into one of the brand's most iconic, keeping fans hooked with fantastic GMT models, field-watch inspired designs, SKX-style sports classics, and creative collaborations like HUF and Pepsi. Moving forward once again, the collection now welcomes the new Seiko 5 Sports "Field Series", which comes fitted with a rotating compass bezel. This specific feature is normally associated with Seiko's higher-end, outdoor-focused Prospex models, so seeing it brought into the highly accessible Seiko 5 Sports family makes this latest release incredibly interesting.

Seiko 5 Sports “Field Series” Black Ref. HDB006J |
With this series, Seiko masterfully balances functionality, great specs, and affordability. Gnomon Watches proudly presents the "Field Series" model featuring a versatile black dial paired with a steel case and bezel. The stainless steel case has a slightly larger profile, measuring 41.0mm in width, 13.2mm thick, and 48.5mm from lug to lug.
The case features a fully brushed finish that gives it a rugged, utilitarian tool-watch look. True to the 2019 Seiko 5 design layout, it uses a push-pull crown that still ensures a solid 100 meters of water resistance. When you flip the watch over, a screw-down exhibition caseback lets you admire the mechanical movement ticking inside. Up front, a domed Hardlex crystal sits over the dial, cutting down on distortion and making the watch incredibly clean and easy to read at a glance.

Seiko's satin brush and high polished finishing |
The real turning point for this watch has to be the bidirectional compass bezel, which is something you definitely don't see every day. While Seiko does have a history with this feature in lines like the Alpinist collection and the "Tortoise" series, its presence here is a major highlight. Unlike a standard dive bezel that tracks elapsed time, this brushed steel compass bezel helps you find your rough bearings using the position of the sun, featuring E, W, and S markings (with North replaced by a handy luminous dot) along with SE, SW, NE, and NW indicators. To tie the whole outdoor tool aesthetic together, the edge of the bezel features a diamond-pattern knurling that provides an incredibly easy grip.
The glossy black dial version features a seconds hand with a red tip for added visibility. Even in low light conditions, the hands and indexes are coated with Lumibrite to ensure effortless timekeeping. The design takes inspiration from military watches and includes 24 hour inner markings, bold Arabic hour markers, and a functional day and date display at 3 o'clock framed in metal, with the Automatic script at 6 o'clock. This time Seiko has given the Arabic numerals a full coating of Lumibrite, which is something many felt was missing from earlier Seiko 5 field watches.

Seiko's 4R36 automatic caliber |
A solid steel sports bracelet completes the timepiece, featuring a three-fold clasp, a secure lock, and a push-button release that heavily recalls classic tool watches. At the heart of the watch sits the 4R36 movement, an evolution of the reliable Caliber 4R platform. This automatic movement features 24 jewels, beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, and offers a power reserve of around 41 hours while cleanly displaying the hours, minutes, central seconds, day, and date.
Following the numerous SKX inspired Seiko 5 dive watch releases, the classic field watches now receive a truly unique update that proves Seiko is looking to give fans something genuinely different this time around. By adding a functional compass bezel and attractive dimensions, this watch breaks away from the usual lineup formulas. For anyone seeking a rugged, outdoor mechanical timepiece with tons of character, this field watch offers exceptional value and performance. It is an in house creation destined to satisfy even the most seasoned enthusiasts who want a tool watch that stands out from the crowd.
