Yema is a name that was born in 1948, created by Henry Louis Belmont, who was a graduate from the National Watchmaking School of Besancon in 1931. The name stayed till today and lingered very well, especially within the dive-watch community, a name that is synonymous with fine French horology.
Mr. Belmont created Yema, who specialized in the manufacturing well-built watches at an honest price (Gnomon's philosophy), which led the brand to take off during the 1960s era. Some of them do ring a bell for vintage watch collectors, for an instant, the 1960s Flygraf pilot chronograph (air), Rallygraf racing chronograph (land), and Yachtingraf regatta chronograph (sea). Further, let's not forget the one and only diver collection that stamps this French maestro into the watchmaking legacy- the legendary Superman diver.
|Yema Superman Heritage GMT Black/Red - Ltd Ed 100pcs
Today, we like to introduce you to the latter that Yema had brought back from their archive. The brand re-introduced the Superman collection recently, and the true vintage-inspired models were a hit. It does prove that Yema still has an active fan and collector base since its recent resurgence, especially with their very own icons. So much so that Yema decided to design and developed their first Superman Heritage GMT line with their fans. These exclusive collaborations based on their Superman DNA with the infusion of a functional globetrotting, two-time zone reading that can read simultaneously.
Before we get started, we like to point out that Yema truly focuses on the brand's iconic diver to craft a faithful homage. They use 3D-modeling on an actual vintage Superman diver from that era during the inception period of the design process.
Faithful to its predecessor, the 300m water-resistance Yema Superman heritage GMT Black/Red is the outcome of their collaboration that features the attractive bi-color bezel, with a discreet yet legible GMT hand. The dimension is true to size 39mm 316L steel case, featuring straight pointy lugs but still keeping the original lug to lug distance of 48mm, and 14mm thick. This retro-GMT diver is a limited edition of 100 pieces.
|Yema's signature locking device for the bezel
Although this was a collaboration piece, and 41% of fans voted for ceramic bezel against a 33% vote for aluminum. Yema decided to stick to its retro theme; having the same as the original Superman 53.00.16, the bezel is in aluminum with luminous markings, which will develop a slight patina in time. The bi-color bezel makes it easier to differentiate day and night hours.
Just like the 1960s model, the most iconic design feature of the Superman that sets it different from others is the locking device for the bezel, located at 3 o'clock, in-between the bezel and the crown.
How does it work? It was a piece of engineering where once the time set and bezel rotated to the position one favors, the crown then locks the bezel with the locking device by having the crown screw back in. Simple yet effective to prevent any unnecessary movement on the bezel.
|Domed Sapphire crystal radiates the vintage charm of 70s divers|
The dial and handset is an ode to the past with the same hour dots, logo, and down to the "traffic-light" style second hand. Also, a GMT hand went from full red to black, and a thin triangle tip for the indication of the second time zone without throwing off the Neo-vintage theme. All of which been applied with luminous that glows well in low-light situations. All can be seen through a high-domed sapphire crystal that gives the retro charm while with durability at the forefront.
Yema did not stop at the case design; they intentionally recreated the original 5-link steel bracelet with alternating brushed and polished surfaces. This accompaniment completes the whole package, and it's downright perfect.
The Yema Superman Heritage is powered by the Swiss ETA 2892-2 automatic GMT caliber, boasting 38 hours power reserve that beats at 28,800bph, letting one enjoy the smooth sweeping seconds with quick-date adjustment and independent GMT hand adjustment on-the-go. All these are protected thoroughly under a solid screwed-in case back, decorated with the essential engravings and the vintage "Y" emblem.
|Exact re-issue hour lame plots and handset|
In all, limited to 100 pieces only (Yema have sold out their stocks), the Superman Heritage GMT Black/Red is a faithful modern re-issue that is nearly identical to the vintage model with a traveler's scheme, in addition to few significant upgrades like the improvements of the case finishing and movement. What's more intriguing is that we can see the parallel between this re-issue and the vintage model on their honest pricing. Yema did a fantastic job getting the community to be involved with their development of a GMT diver, that still feels and admired like the vintage model, and then fusing their take with a GMT twist, that offered good value for those willing to venture outside the usual suspects in the market.
