Seiko 5 Sports Silver-Tone Blue Ref. SRPC51J1

Seiko made its first watch in 1913, and 50 years later, Seiko 5 was born in 1963. In its long history, Seiko 5 has won respect, affection, and loyalty of young people from all around the world. Seiko 5 Sports offers a new opportunity to feel the spirit of the active and innovative design of that time. Seiko set out to build a watch with five attributes, from which the watch gets its name: a self-winding automatic movement, resistance to water, a day-date in a single window, a recessed crown, and a durable case.

Seiko 5 Sports Silver-Tone Blue Ref. SRPC51J1

The Seiko 5 Sports Silver-Tone Blue Ref. SRPC51J1 was introduced as part of the Seiko 5 collection to the Japanese market. The Seiko 5 collection is known and proven to watch enthusiasts for being reliable, affordable and well-designed.

It is powered by Seiko's automatic caliber, 4R36, operating at 21,600 BPH (3 Hertz) with hacking and hand winding capabilities. It has 24 jewels with a power reserve of 40 hours.

The 100m water resistant stainless steel case measures 44.5mm case without the crown, with a lug width of 22mm. The main highlight goes to the unique mid-case design with a mixture of satin brush and Seiko's high polishing on the sides can be seen throughout the watch, giving it a somewhat premium yet rugged feel. The short-designed lugs allow the watch to wrap around the wrist on all wrist sizes, big or small.

4R36 automatic caliber

You most probably noticed the case design that is inspired by the 70s Seiko. Specifically King Seiko’s ref. 5626-7040, combining another feature of the Seiko 5- the two-toned blue/silver diver bezel which is uni-directional.

The two-tone bezel has grooves on them that allows the user to get a good grip, with the markers in white to mark the importance of divers during their dives. The bezel markings are then convex towards the crystal, which reminisce to the “Zamba Monster” model. Sitting atop of the bezel is Seiko's proprietary Hardlex crystal.

Moving to the back, the case back features a display/exhibition back so owners can admire the movement ticking away. The case even comes with lug holes allowing swapping of straps with ease.
The dial is where it gets interesting. Seiko 5 being a younger sub-brand of Seiko means the design is a little less conventional and daring. The dial features a sunburst blue made up of raised gilt markers. The 12-hour markers are in block shape, flanked by the green markers that are in-sync with the color theme, yet in a sporty manner.

Seiko's proprietary LumiBrite

The SRP51J1 is coined the “Silver-Tone” due to its unique handset. The harpoon style hour and baton minute hands are done in golden metallic color even for the second hands that raised its ritziness. The handsets generously coated with Seiko's LumiBrite allowing it to glow brightly in the dark for hours

The Seiko 5 Sports Silver-Tone Blue Ref. SRPB51J1 comes with a stainless steel bracelet with three-fold clasp with a secure lock and push-button release.
The Seiko 5 Sports Silver-Tone Blue Ref. SRPB51J1 is probably one exciting watch at a fantastic price. With its excellent price point and good value for money, it is a watch that will likely find itself onto the wrist of most new watch buyers. It also makes an excellent watch for those starting on a mechanical watch.
