The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) is the world's leading scuba diver training organization. Both started out serving the diving industry in 1965, and in continuation of celebrating this special relationship, Seiko introduced the Prospex PADI 200M Automatic Ref. SBDC055. This is one of the most anticipated Seiko x PADI following the success of the 62MAS reissue, SBDC051 and SBDC053.
Prospex for Seiko basically means "Professional Specification" that their timepieces in this category are built with very high standards to be used by professionals. Seiko’s answer to their 62MAS from 1965 are the modernized and pocket-friendly priced Seiko Prospex PADI 200M Automatic Ref. SBDC055. These new timepieces also echo the design of the 1965 original, but are thoroughly up-to-date in their functions and meet Seiko's stringent standards for diver's watches.

The Seiko Prospex PADI 200M Automatic Ref. SBDC055 is powered by Seiko's automatic caliber, 6R15, operating at 21,600 BPH (3 Hertzs) with hacking and hand winding capabilities. It has 23 jewels with a power reserve of 50 hours through a Spron 510 mainspring.
The 200m water resistant stainless steel case measure 42.6mm case without the crown, has a lug to lug length of 50mm, and a height of about 13.8mm, with a lug width of 20mm. The 200m water resistant case is treated with Seiko’s DiaShield coating on the case and bracelet. This provide scratch-protection and extra corrosion resistance. DiaShield reduce scratches and scuffs significantly. The bezel rotates buttery smooth into 120 positions has minimal free play in a clockwise direction. Mixture of satin brush and Seiko high polishing on the sides can be seen on the whole watch, the Zaratsu polished line on the case side adds a touch of contemporary refinement. The bezel is also treated with a blue ‘Hard-Coating’ to match the overall blue theme. The downward curving lugs which is essentially a sweeping unbroken eclipse from lug to lug helps seat the watch very comfortably on the wrist.

The screw down crown at three o'clock is sterile. Moving to the back of the watch, the screw down case back allows 200m water resistant , and is also brushed, featuring the recognizable tsunami emblem that is staple on the other Seiko divers. The case does comes with lug holes allowing swapping of straps with ease.
Like it other siblings, the dial design is hugely based on the 62MAS but it does not end there. The most prominent being the blue-to-black gradient dial. The upper half of the dial is an indigo blue. It gradually transitions into a deep black on the lower half of the dial almost a visual representation of diminishing light as one descends into the depth of the ocean. The wave texture of the dial combined with the gradient dial is one to admire in person to understand the beauty of it. It is quite a beauty to look at and probably a dial you will spend a lot of time admiring. Carrying on the PADI tradition, the minute hand is finished in red to match the red index at every quarter of the rehaut.

The Prospex PADI 200M Automatic Ref. SBDC055 comes with the Seiko blue rubber strap with metal hardware with the special PADI box. But we know many customers have requested for it to come fitted on the stainless steel bracelet like on the SBDC051. So here you go, we customized it and offer you the option to purchase it with the steel bracelet.
Overall, the Prospex PADI 200M Automatic Ref. SBDC055 is a very worthy addition to the Prospex collection and certainly a model that will find its way into many diver watch lover's collection. If you are looking for a little more adventure than the regular black or blue divers, the SBDC055's spash of color is certainly a strong contender.
