First off, their Prospex line for Seiko means "Professional Specification" that their timepieces in this category are built with very high standards to be used by professionals. One of the most popular releases in recent years is probably the remake of the Seiko 6309 (circa 1976-1988) commonly known as the Turtle. The original 6309 divers are pretty rare given its short 12 years production lifespan. Although there are many examples in the market, there are less than an original dozen.

The Seiko Prospex Darth Turtle Blacked Out Edition Ref. SBDY041 is the latest tweak and customized addition by Seiko themselves, based on their precursor- the STO turtle Ref. SBDY027, with a blackout makeover and a fume blue dial combo.
Before we get started, the Seiko Prospex 200M Automatic Darth Turtle Ref. SBDY041 is the latest JDM model launched in 2019 and solely comes from the land of the rising sun.
Before going into details, the SBDY041 Blacked Out Edition is a JDM model made available only in Japan. Therefore, it comes with a selectable choice of English or Kanji date.
The overall look of the Turtle is one of a kind, quirky and unique given its unusual case silhouette. It is powered by Seiko's automatic caliber, 4R36, operating at 21,600 BPH (3 Hertz) with hacking and hand winding capabilities. It has 24 jewels with a power reserve of 40 hours.

The 200m water resistant stainless steel case with black DLC coating, measure 44.3mm case without the crown but has a lug to lug length of only 47mm, and a height of about 13mm, with a lug width of 22mm. The short lugs to lugs length mean this watch wraps around the wrist on all(small or big) wrist sizes like a glove making it extremely comfortable.
This Black DLC coating, firstly, provides scratch-protection and extra corrosion resistance. While it does not make the watch scratch resistant like Dievas and Damasko, it does reduce scratches and scuffs significantly, and further gives one a more sleek and personalized look. Also, The DLC treatment on the Turtle features a mixture of sand-blasting and Seiko polishing on the sides can be seen on the whole watch, giving it a somewhat premium deep matte black tool watch feel. This distinctive feature makes this special edition unique in the turtle collection.
The bezel is aluminum and has significant printed markings on it. It rotates buttery smooth into 120 positions has little to no free play in a clockwise direction. Sitting atop of the bezel is Seiko's Hardlex.

The screw-down crown at four o'clock is sterile. Flipping the SBDY041 over, the screw-down case back allows 200m water-resistant and is also brushed, featuring the recognizable tsunami emblem that is a staple on the other Seiko divers. The case does come with lug holes allowing swapping of straps with ease.
Onto the dial, the design, and colorway based on the Darth 62MAS Ref. SBDC085. With fume blue dial and applied markers. It is a beauty to look at and probably can stare at it for hours. The periphery is almost black, but it gets brighter to oceanic blue tone towards the middle. The hands are the same as the SBDY021 and 27 except the minute hand done in bright yellow for good readability when in dark environment; more extensive and carry long-lasting Lumibrite to be highly legible even in dark water.
The Seiko Prospex Darth Turtle Blacked Out Edition Ref. SBDY041 comes with an accordion-style silicone strap with matching black buckle and keeper which combines high durability and comfort.
Overall, the Seiko Prospex Darth Turtle Blacked Out Edition Ref. SBDY041 is the latest iteration and worthy addition to the Prospex collection. The sleek blackout look transformed the heritage Turtle diver look into something more contemporary with a modern touch to it. Pairing with a deep blue dial and a pop of yellow from its minute hand indeed a model that will find its way into many diver watch lover's collections.
