On 11 November 1918, the same day as the armistice that ended World War I, Georges Schaeren founded the Mido Watch Company (then known as Mido G. Scaheren & Co.) Schaeren was a highly competent watchmaker, obtaining his diploma in a watchmaking school in Solothurn and working at various watchmakers until his own company was founded. The word mido translates to “to measure” in Spanish - a fitting name for a famed watchmaker. After all, the measurement of time has fascinated men for centuries.

Apart from its name, the original Ocean Star launched in 1959 bears little resemblance to the current line-up. Instead, today’s watch closely resembles the Mido Powerwind 1000 released in 1961 - the brand’s first decompression timer. Mido also referenced their SkyDive Diver and Diver Scuba watches, giving you the Mido Ocean Star 200 that you see today.

The Mido Ocean Star 200 Blue has a case diameter of 42.5mm and a thickness of a mere 11.6mm. It is made of high-quality 316L stainless steel and is entirely satin-brushed apart from the chamfer edges of the lugs done in high polish. That touch of polish gives the timepiece a more sophisticated case finishing, elevating its style. The watch wears like a contemporary dive watch and has a fabulous wrist presence. The Mido Ocean Star 200 Blue also features a 60-click unidirectional dive time bezel in the same shade of blue as the dial. The bezel allows the user to track elapsed time.

Calibre 80 – Based on the ETA C07.621

Baton indices are used throughout, except for square indices at 3 and 9 and a double square index at 6. A day/date aperture can be found at 3, adding a helpful complication whilst not destroying the dial's proportions. The day and date change happen instantaneously at midnight, so no worries about a slow date change here. All the applied indices sit atop a matte blue dial that is a shade synonymous with the ocean. Skeletonised hands are utilised, with a red-tipped second hand completing the design.

A flat sapphire crystal sits atop the dial to protect it from scratches. The crystal is coated with layers of anti-reflective coating, ensuring that the watch's legibility will not be a problem even in harsh lighting. Mido covers the indices and hands with Swiss X1 Superluminova, allowing for a bright green glow in the dark. A signed screw-down crown and caseback combine to give the watch 200m of water resistance, making it a proper dive watch.

Intricate ripple patterns reminiscent of marine depths

Underneath the gorgeous caseback is the Mido Calibre 80 - the heart of the timepiece. The Calibre 80 is based on the Swiss ETA C07.621 movement. It has 25 jewels, beats at 21,600 BPH, and has a whopping 80 hours of power reserve. It is a tried and tested calibre that is robust and reliable, ensuring that it will tick accurately for years to come.

The movement is also fitted with the Nivachron™ balance spring, which has better magnetic resistance than silicone and offers excellent shock resistance. It is also very effective against temperature variations in wearing conditions, ensuring that the movement will work reliably and accurately in changing weather.

SuperLuminova for Superb Glow In Dark

Mido pairs the Ocean Star 200 Blue on a 22mm blue solid stainless steel bracelet. The bracelet is robust and comfortable, tapering gently to a signed Mido clasp. The bracelet will also be suitable for any occasion, from swimming in the ocean to matching it with a business jacket.

Overall, the Mido Ocean Star 200 Blue is the quintessential dive watch from a reputable Swiss brand steeped in history. Packed with modern-day specifications and boasting a contemporary case size, this is not to be missed.
