What does it take to be a true sci-fi watch? The advent of quartz watches (also known as the quartz crisis) in the 1970s to the early 80s has sparked countless innovations as technology rapidly advances, this led to the integration of advanced miniaturized computers in wristwatches. The introduction of light emitting diode (LED) digital watches took the world by storm, utilizing state-of-the-art quartz technology with a display illuminating the time with a simple push of a button - A feature that was considered to be a futuristic space-age invention head of their time.
Fast forward to present day, digital LED watches have enjoyed the spotlight with the recent popularity of many LED watch re-issues such as the Bulova Computron and the Hamilton Pulsar. The quirky and retrograde factors from vintage inspired digital watches evokes a sense of enjoyment, a true throwback to the past. YEMA has jumped on the bandwagon to debut their own modern re-issue of the LED digital watch modelled after their LED collection from YEMA’s catalog from the 1970s.

The case is redesigned in a 3D construction, bringing additional depth and detail while faithfully capturing the retro futuristic aesthetic of the original 70s model. The angular gold treated 316L stainless steel case of the YEMA LED is executed with precision with a mixture between various finishes. The top of the watch is satin brushed while the sides are polished. The striking polished chamfer edge showcases modern craftsmanship, adding contrast between both finishes.
YEMA hit the nail on the head with classic and proportionate dimensions, the 37.5mm case diameter and lug to lug distance 42.5mm allows the YEMA LED to fit comfortably on many wrist sizes, looking right in place in various scenarios. The watch has a slim case profile with a thickness of only 10mm, sliding smoothly under shirt cuffs, as well as minimizing the chances of painfully hitting the timepiece on surfaces that would cause an unsightly scratch.

In line with the vintage theme, the watch comes supplied with a brushed 20mm stainless steel broad link bracelet that conforms well around the wrist. The bracelet is secured with a hook mechanism on the YEMA signed clasp that locks safely into place. The 20mm lug width fits a multitude of strap options to suit the occasion.
The YEMA LED is equipped with a stainless steel screw-down case back with a beautifully engraved YEMA crest, providing a surprising 330 feet (100m) of water resistance, providing plenty of protection against accidental splashes.
Stylist case with a retro vibe
On the face of the YEMA LED houses a rectangular red-tinted mineral crystal that stretches horizontally from one end to another, protecting the LED display behind it. The dial illuminates with red numerals to tell the time with one press on the button on the side of the case, a second press to reveal the date and a third press to show the elapsed seconds. The button on the 4 o’clock position is utilized to adjust the time and format, making operations of the watch simple and functional.
The YEMA LED remains in standby mode to maximize power efficiency, displaying the time only when the button is activated. This particular feature is part of the appeal in owning this piece, mimicking the feel and experience of this historic model - Definitely a cool conversation starter.
