The Seiko Landmaster Springdrive Ref. SBDB015 is probably one of the quirkiest springdrive watch to come out of Seiko. The Landmaster is greatly inspired by the Seiko Spacewalk which was designed for astronaut, Richard Garriot. The goal was to create a lightweight, airtight, high readability and easy to use chronograph and of course accurate. And the Landmaster Springdrive Ref. SBDB015 ticks all the boxes.
|Landmaster Springdrive Ref. SBDB015|
The Landmaster Springdrive Ref. SBDB015 is powered by Seiko's iconoic Springdrive movement, 5R66. The 30 jewels Springdrive dualtime(GMT) movement features a power reserve of 72 hours(3 days), has a power reserve indicator and is used primarily in the Grand Seiko collection.
The Springdrive is a conventional automatic movement with a few key components replaced. Namely, the functional time keeping parts are gone, which are basically the pallet fork, escape wheel, balance wheel and hairspring. Replacing them is a tri-synchro regulator which is a new way of extremely precisely controlling the amount of power coming out of the mainspring. The tri-synchro regulator converts kinetic energy from the mainspring into electrical energy, which powers a quartz crystal and an electromagnetic brake which slows the movement down in accordance with information from the quartz crystal.
The result is it has the beauty of a mechanical movement, the accuracy of a quartz movement, and the smoothest seconds hand in the world.

The Spacewalk inspired case is a definitely something you don't see everyday. The titanium case is finished in multiple finishing, polished on the side of the case and bezel with fine satin brushed details on the top of the lugs and bezel. Titanium by nature is a dull material and it takes a special technique and experience to finish it to a mirror finshing. The use of titanium means this watch is extremely comfortable due to its weight or lack of.
The dial's makers and hands are treated with Seiko's Lumibrite for awesome low light visibility. Sapphire crystal with non-reflective upper coating for good visibility.

The Seiko Landmaster Springdrive Ref. SBDB015 is definitely not a watch you see on everyone's wrist as it is quite an acquired taste. Definitely for someone who is looking for something that is not the usual diver or sports watch. The close relation of it to the Spacewalk makes this rather charming in its own rights. It is bold and packed with arguably Seiko's most accurate movement. The watch with its titanium case is quite something you have to see and feel in person to understand the amount of work Seiko's watchmakers have put into it. The Landmaster is also feature packed with a GMT function, date, power reserve counter and DiaShield. Nobody says watch collecting has to be boring isn't it.
