With the landscape of watches getting crowded with the ever-growing competition, many strong players dominate the market to overshadow brands like Glycine. Nevertheless, Glycine continues to produce a wide array of compelling watches that hold their own. Established back in 1914, Glycine was founded by Eugène Meylan in Bienne, Switzerland, a place where countless prestigious watchmakers call home. Meylan was an accomplished watch engineer who strove for perfection and nothing less. Through his strong will and determination, he brought Glycine to greater heights with the successful production of extremely precise and fine miniature movements that were encased in precious gold and platinum cases.

Glycine watches bring a whole lot of value when it comes to high-quality Swiss made timepieces with reliable movements. Crafting reliable watches has been a core value reflecting Meylan’s determination for perfection since over 100 years ago, from the creation of the world’s first ever 24-hour dual time watch to historic dive watches that held so much character. For this reason, it is apparent why tool watches are usually the type of watches that first comes to mind when one thinks Glycine. However, alongside Glycine’s suite of tool watches lies a range of mechanical field watches that sits towards the dressier end of the spectrum. Here’s the exciting part - it’s a moonphase, on a watch that has “combat” in its name.
Right off the bat, the Glycine Combat Classic 40 “MoonPhase” Black Ref. GL0116 is encased in a classic stainless steel case with an understated old school charm. Although the case is finished with rather simple finishings, it is executed meticulously with a right blend of brushed and polished surfaces. The top of the lugs carries fine satin brushing that transitions to a high polish at the side of the case. For an extra dash of refinement, the bezel is highly polished as well, gracefully catching light reflections.

Measuring in with a case diameter of 40mm, a thickness of 12.2mm and a surprisingly compact lug to lug distance of 46mm. The case features an attractive shape as the curvaceous lugs slope downwards gently to conform to the wrist pleasingly. 40mm is indeed a versatile size for a piece like this, wearing exceptionally well for both dress up or dress down situations. Supplied with a 22mm black textured leather strap, this will be the perfect dress watch for a fancy evening occasion.
It is clear why the Combat Classic 40 “MoonPhase” Black Ref. GL0116 sparked our fascination when it was first released - this is a watch that drew inspiration from elements of a combat watch while incorporating a moonphase complication, a unique astronomical feature commonly found on fine haute horlogerie dress pieces. The beautiful moonphase is showcased beneath an intricate cutout at the 6 o’clock position, indicating the phases of the moon that revolves to a full moon once every lunar month. While it may not be a feature regularly utilized by the masses, it manifests an artistic appeal for your eyes to dwell on whenever you gaze down to check the time. In essence, it is almost like having the vast night sky on your wrist.

On the deep black sunburst dial, the sleek stick hands and hour markers exhibit great harmony as the hour hands touch the inner rims indicating the 24 hour time while the minute hand reaches out all the way to the lume dots right above the hour markers. Both hands and markers are treated with Swiss Super-LumiNova for a green glow in the dark. The dial is protected by a piece of domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with 3 layers of anti-reflective treatment coated on the underside.
Under the hood, the Combat Classic 40 “MoonPhase” Black Ref. GL0116 runs on Glycine’s Cal. GL280 Swiss automatic movement. Based on the Sellita SW 280-1 movement modified to include a moonphase complication, this 26 jewel movement is renowned for its reliability as a ‘workhorse’ movement with a 4Hz beat rate of 28,800 BPH and a power reserve of 38 hours. The movement with Glycine’s custom rotor is visible at the back of the watch through its screw-down mineral crystal display case back which provides protection against accidental water splashes with 50m of water resistance.
All things considered, the Combat Classic 40 “MoonPhase” Black Ref. GL0116 is a noteworthy dress piece within the wide range of well-made timepieces Glycine has to offer. Other than looking visually stunning, this is a piece that packs incredible value as a mechanical moonphase watch. With over a century of experience in fine Swiss watchmaking, Glycine has continuously delivered watches with great specifications, solid build and impressive value.
