Holding deep and rich history in dive watches, Squale has demonstrated eminence in producing high quality dive watches that are built for task. From manufacturing watch cases to many respected Swiss watch brands such as Tag Heuer, Doxa and Blancpain to supplying timepieces to the Italian Navy’s Diving Corps, Squale truly embodies the connection between their horological dedication and true diving enthusiasts.
Squale watches have become widely sought after by watch lovers and divers alike due to their timeless design and attractive specifications. Paying tribute to their heritage, Squale unveiled a breathtaking new collection to the 30 ATMOS line - The Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue Recalling many elements of vintage Squale dive watches, this is a piece that will definitely touch the hearts of those that are seeking a design that is a throwback to the 60s.

Despite being a vintage inspired design, the case of the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue has been upgraded to a contemporary and modest size. Sporting a case diameter of 39mm (40.8mm when inclusive of the bezel), this piece fits incredibly well on a wide range of wrist sizes compared to a 35mm case being utilized in that era, which is considered to be small by today’s standards.
Taking a look at the side profile of the case, the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue features the distinctively sharp lugs that are synonymous with the case Squale produced for the legendary Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe back in the 1960s - One of the most prominent watch designs in the history of dive watches that inspired many today. Together with the slim case thickness of only 12mm, the watch leans towards the dressier end of the dive watch spectrum.

Done in a full polished finish and intricate bevelling on the lugs, the finishing on the case is executed impeccably well, adding a luxurious character to the tool watch. At the 3 o’clock position, the large screw-down crown is true to its retro design with no crown guards, which makes setting the time a pleasant experience. Topping it off, the crown is tastefully signed with the Von Büren logo, the mark of the distinguished family that founded Squale.
Being a diver watch, the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue houses a stainless steel 120-click unidirectional bezel. The choice of using traditional stainless steel exerts a rugged vibe, being less likely to crack compared to traditional materials such as Bakelite. In contrast with the satin brushed finish on the bezel, the engraved numerals and markers are painted black for added visibility.

Undoubtedly, the main attraction of the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue lies in the mesmerising blue sunburst dial, which is pleasure to view when it catches the light at different angles. The deep blue sunburst dial matches well against the contrasting stainless steel bezel, making it stand out even further. Moreover, the watch features a pie-pan dial, sloping down gently at the dial's outer edge, adding another layer of dimension to the piece that brings it to a whole new level. Protecting the dial is a piece of boxed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the underside, mimicking the feel of domed acrylic crystals used in the past while providing superior scratch resistance.
In line with the vintage style, the dial uses maxi indexes reminiscent of many popular dive watches during the 60s to 70s. The unique arrow shaped hands and indexes are generously treated with Superluminova lume for a bright green blow in dark lighting conditions. Another element that makes the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue truly special is the font used for the Squale logo at the 12 o’clock position, the bubbly style logo is a throwback to the logo used in previous iterations of Squale watches, paying homage to their heritage. The addition of the “super” text printed at the 6 o’clock position is another nod to Squale’s 1960s 30 ATMOS Super that was released for the Italian market.

At the heart of the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue lies the Swiss-made Sellita SW 200 “REGLAGE ELABORÉ" 26 jewels automatic movement. The 4 Hz beat rate (28,800BPH), provides mechanical reliability.
The Sub-39 SuperBlue comes on an oyster-style bracelet with polished center links and brushed outer links. It gently tapers to a signed Squale buckle. As a modern dive watch drawing inspiration from the same era, it is thus reminiscent of the Omega Seamaster Heritage’s bracelet. That’s not a bad thing at all - the bracelet looks and feels amazing on the wrist, making the watch feel a lot more premium than its price tag suggests.

In a nutshell, the Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue brings a timeless and classic design faithful to Squale’s strong heritage. While vintage-inspired watches have been increasingly popular in recent years, this new release will be a piece that will certainly stand out from the crowd.
