Things get even more exciting underneath its impressive appearance with a full-fledged “true GMT” automatic in-house caliber, truly conjuring up the spirit of adventure for jet set travellers.

During Baselworld 2016, Seiko announced the Presage collection, a series of sporty dress watches to international markets, bringing to the table a range of premium models that were a significant step up from their entry-level offerings. This captivating line up became a fan-favourite amongst avid watch collectors for their impressive value, premium materials and amazing dial work usually only found in higher-tier Grand Seiko models. Part of Seiko’s Presage collection, the Sharp Edged Series showcases a powerful and fresh interpretation of beautiful Japanese artistry embodied in its unique sharp case designs.

The Seiko Presage Sharp Edged GMT “Sumi-Iro'' Ref. SARF005 indeed looks as sharp as its name suggests, flaunting an incredibly refined 316L stainless steel case with some sporty dimensions. Measuring in with a diameter of 42.2mm, a lug to lug distance of 49.2mm and a thickness of 13.7mm, the watch displays a dashing wrist presence while staying pleasantly comfortable on the wrist.

Executing great case finishings is definitely no stranger to Seiko. On the SARF005, finishing is carried out meticulously to a high level of detail, presenting hairline satin brushing on the top of the lugs, harmoniously transitioning to a mirror-like highly polished finish on the side of the case. To preserve these brilliant finishes, the case is treated with Seiko’s proprietary super-hard coating for superior protection against scratches.

Intricate finishing on the multi faceted case and bracelet

One of the distinguishing characteristics of the watch that sets itself apart from other Presage models lies in the angular case shape exhibiting a sharp and crisp design, portraying magnificent Japanese craftsmanship with exceptional refinement. The attention to detail is carried down to the matching 20mm solid stainless steel bracelet, displaying a brushed finish with intricate polishing on the edges of the middle link for an alluring multi-dimensional effect. Like the case, the bracelet also features Seiko’s super-hard coating to keep it looking as fresh as ever.

Notably, the Presage Sharp Edged GMT “Sumi-Iro'' Ref. SARF005 houses a 24-hour bezel design that closely resembles the bezel on the Seiko Ananta Spring Drive GMT Ref. SNR021, a premium, high-performance GMT offering from Seiko that certainly bridges the gap between Seiko and Grand Seiko models. Everything about the watch seemingly captures the light without much effort, the bezel is no exception. Lacquered with Seiko’s proprietary DiaShield super-hard coating, the deep black steel bezel exhibits a slick glossy sheen while remaining extremely legible thanks to its contrasting white markers.

Underneath the flat scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, the Presage Sharp Edged GMT “Sumi-Iro'' Ref. SARF005 brings forth a spark of excitement with a stunning black “Sumi-Iro'' textured dial, inspired by the black ink used in the fine art of Japanese painting and calligraphy. The applied LumiBrite-treated hour indices and sword-style hands are masterfully polished, bringing a radiant beauty to the dial. Alongside the power reserve indicator resting between the 9 and 10 o’clock position and the date function at the 6 o’clock position, the bold red arrow GMT hand adds a striking touch of color to this amazing piece.

This spectacular dial beautifully incorporates a Japanese Asanoha pattern, a pattern inspired by the hemp plant grown in Japan ever since the Heian period over a thousand years ago. Traditionally used as a material for fabrics, this distinctive pattern holds great significance in Japanese culture symbolizing rapid growth and good health. The geometric pattern aligns seamlessly with the angular nature of the piece while bringing an additional layer of dimension to the dial.

Seiko caliber 6R64 automatic GMT movement

The Presage Sharp Edged GMT “Sumi-Iro'' Ref. SARF005 is driven by the in-house Seiko caliber 6R64 automatic GMT movement. Being a “true” GMT movement, the GMT hand can be adjusted independently without hacking the second hand, a feature truly appreciated by frequent travellers. Speaking of the second hand, the 29 jewel movement beats at a smooth 28,800 BPH (4Hz) while providing a substantial power reserve of 45 hours. The exhibition screw-in caseback allows for a view of the exceptional movement, this also equips the watch a considerable 100m of water resistance.
