In 1891, about 40 miles west of Cleveland, a fast mail train collided head-on with a passenger train. This accident later became known as the Great Kipton Train Wreck. The cause of the accident? The passenger train’s conductor’s watch had stopped functioning for a mere 4 minutes before restarting.
After that collision, renowned jeweller Webb C. Ball was appointed Chief Time Inspector to investigate the accident’s timekeeping issues. Ball then formulated a new timekeeping system for the railroad industry, revolutionising timekeeping (in the industry) and thus making train travel significantly safer for both passengers and employees. The watches that employees used were certified and issued by Ball, which led to the birth of the legendary company known today as Ball Watch Co.

Ball watches are renowned for their precision, robustness, and durability. This new series of the Roadmaster Marine is exactly that. The Roadmaster Marine Fumé Black Ceramic is a gorgeous timepiece with great proportions. It is 40mm in diameter, 47.8mm lug-to-lug and 14mm thick. While this might seem like the watch is a tad thick, a 14mm thickness on a 40mm watch will not look out of place and is actually only around 0.5mm thicker than your average dive watch. The case is predominantly polished, although only the lugs would be visible from the top down. That is because the bezel takes up most of the space on the case, giving the watch that extra feeling of being well built and being able to withstand harsh conditions. This is in line with Ball’s own tagline - accuracy under adverse conditions.
Does being deep underwater sound like an adverse condition? You bet, and the Ball Roadmaster Marine Fumé Black Ceramic has that covered too with a 200m depth rating. It also has a lumed blue ceramic 120-click unidirectional dive time bezel, allowing you to track your dive timings or even how long that cake needs to bake for in the oven!

The Roadmaster Marine features a gorgeous black fumé dial with a darker black accent on the outside transitioning to a light grey-ish black in the middle. Ball has truly knocked the ball (pun intended) out of the park here as the dial is simply fascinating to look at. Rectangular indices are used throughout, apart from large Arabic numerals at 12, 6, 9, and the day/date window at 3 o’clock. Covering the gorgeous dial is a domed sapphire crystal.
Here’s where Ball deviates from the conventional. To ensure maximum readability in dark conditions, all Ball watches do not use Superluminova. Instead, their watches are fitted with micro gas tubes on the indices as well as the hands. By using innovative Swiss laser technology, the gas tubes are up to a hundred times brighter than your typical luminescent paint used in the watch industry and have a lifespan of over 25 years! They also do not require an external energy source to function.

An exhibition caseback adorns the back of the watch, showcasing the COSC certified BALL RR1102-C movement. This movement is based on the ETA 2836-2, which features 25 jewels, beats at 28,800 BPH and has a 38-hour power reserve. As it is a certified chronometer, the daily deviance is a magnificent -4/+6 seconds! Not impressive enough you say? No worries. This Roadmaster Marine is also anti-magnetic up to 4,800A/m and is also built to withstand a crazy 5,000Gs of shock.
Completing the watch is a solid H-link brushed stainless steel bracelet, which gently tapers to a signed deployant clasp. This completes the package for one to use for any aquatic activities without compromising in quality and comfort.
