Flieger 40 Chronograph 3H129 - Sapphire

Founded in 1907 by Julius Epple, Aristo combines Swiss-made precision and Pforzheim watchmaking tradition. Back then, the brand was known as  Aristo Uhren- and Uhrgehäusefabrik (Aristo Watches and Watch Cases Manufacturing). The company was passed down two generations to Helmut Epple, the grandson of Julius. Helmut then passed on the mantle to Vollmer - who fused the development of Aristo and his own family business - which led to the company that we know today as Aristo Vollmer GmbH.

Today, Aristo continues to excel in producing impressive German-made timepieces that range from classical designs to Flieger watches. This latest release from the German brand is no exception. Flieger chronographs are seeing a resurgence lately, but the timepieces on the market are usually on the larger side of things - 43mm and upwards. Aristo fills a void in the market with their rendition of the popular Flieger Chronograph.

Aristo Flieger 40 Chronograph 3H129 - Sapphire

Made from an entirely sand-blasted 316L stainless steel case, the watch is 40mm in diameter with a lug-to-lug of 48mm and has a thickness of 14mm - not too bad for a chronograph. Thanks to the relatively short lug-to-lug, the watch will wear well even on people with smaller wrist sizes. The sandblasted finish of the case also gives the watch a utilitarian no-nonsense vibe - making it seem like an actual flieger that German fighter pilots used in WWII.

The Aristo Flieger 40 Chronograph is clearly inspired by instrument clusters found in fighter planes. And that means it is designed with legibility in mind. The dial is kept simple and sticks to the basics. Bold Arabic numbers are surrounded by a tachymeter on the edge of the dial while the chronograph hand is in a contrasting red colour. This design philosophy is found in most chronographs in the 1980s where function is all that matters. The chronograph subdials are spread evenly across the dial at 6, 9 and 12. Lastly, a day and date complication done unobtrusively can be found at 3 o’clock. Aristo utilises Swiss Old Radium Superluminova on the Arabic numerals, ensuring the readability of the dial in the dark whilst giving the watch an appealing vintage feel.

316L Stainless steel in matte finished with Sapphire crystal

This Aristo Flieger 40 Chronograph is usually affixed with a mineral crystal if purchased elsewhere. However, Aristo has fitted sapphire crystals exclusively for the watches that are shipped to us. This way, you get the scratch resistance of sapphire without compromising on the aesthetics of the timepiece - the best of both worlds if you ask me. The Aristo Flieger 40 Chronograph is also water-resistant up to 50m.

If you flip the Aristo Flieger 40 Chronograph over, you will find that it has an exhibition case back that proudly shows off the movement within - the Swiss-made Selita SW500 chronograph movement. The SW500 hacks, hand winds and has a beat rate of 28,800 BPH. As it is based on the famous Valjoux 7750 movement, you can rest assured that the movement is robust and reliable and will definitely stand the test of time.

SuperLuminova glows brightly

The Aristo Flieger 40 Chronograph comes on a riveted 20mm leather strap. Not only is it an aesthetically fitting strap to match a flieger, but the rivets were also placed there historically during WWII to ensure that the watch didn’t slide or fly off the wrist. The brown leather strap will also conform well to the shape of your wrist over time. The strap tapers slightly to a sandblasted buckle which matches the texture of the watch case.

Flieger chronographs are usually too big for the modern-day man. Coming in at 40mm, the Aristo Flieger 40 Chronograph Sapphire is the perfect size for everyone. Armed with classic good looks, great finishing and a robust movement inside, this is the watch to go for if you are on the market for a flieger chronograph.
