Oris’s deep commitment
The independent Swiss watchmaker’s latest diver’s watch is inspired by a submarine volcano.
In October 2011, strange activity was observed off the coast of El Hierro, the most south-western of the Spanish-owned Canary Islands. Patches of pale-coloured water began appearing, dead fish floated on the ocean surface, and locals noted a strong smell of sulphur in the air.
It turned out that these were the first signs of a submarine volcanic eruption, some 400 metres below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. The eruption continued until March the following year, leaving the cone of the volcano just 88 metres below the water’s surface.
Oris is delighted to announce that it has partnered with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) to support three scholarships for Master students of the Faculty of Marine Science at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). The scholarships will have the possibility to make its Master thesis in the context of Vulcano project at the Oceanographic Centre of the Canary Islands, Tenerife. Despite El Hierro Island being part of the Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO since 2000, the underwater volcanology of this island is the least researched of the Canary Islands.
Funds for Oris’s contribution to the scholarship will be raised through sales of the Oris El Hierro Limited Edition watch, a black DLC-coated version of the Oris Aquis. The back of the watch will feature an engraving of the volcano and its coordinates.
The new El Hierro Limited Edition watch mimics the volcanic rock with its black and grey colour scheme, while the red used on the bezel minutes scale, dial and central seconds hand represent molten lava.
The watch is powered by an automatic movement and has all the features common to Oris’s collection of Aquis diver’s watches, including a unidirectional rotating bezel with a ceramic inlay; a crown protection device; water-resistance to 30 bar/300m, and a black rubber strap with the Oris-developed safety anchor and quick-adjust sliding-sledge folding clasp.
The Oris El Hierro Limited Edition joins an exclusive list of limited edition diving watches made by the independent Swiss brand. Like each of its predecessors, it’s a high-functioning tool that contributes to the work of an environmentally focused organisation. It will be limited to 2,000 pieces.
