4. Military Watches |
| |
4.1 What does the "H3 Radiation"
Logos on the dial means? |
| |
It refers to the
tritium used on the dial. Tritium (H3) is an unstable isotope of
hydrogen that decays through beta emissions to the stable element
helium (He). |
| |
|
| |
4.2 How do the luminous glow on
their own? |
| |
Mechanics of the
hydrogen decay excites the phosphorescent (luminous) pigments
causing them to phosphoresce (glow). Thus there is no need for an
external ultra-violet source to excite the phosphorescent material. |
| |
|
| |
4.3 What is the half-life of the
Tritium? |
| |
Tritium has a
half-life of 12.5 years, so every 12.5 years one-half of the parent
tritium decays into the daughter helium. |
| |
|
| |
4.4 What is the life span of the
luminous? |
| |
Luminous will always
be present and glow. Once the usefulness of the tritium in exciting
the phosphorescent material (luminous) no longer exists, the
phosphorescent (luminous) material may still be excited by
ultra-violet radiation (eg. sunlight, neon light). |
| |
|
| |
4.5 Will the radiation from the
tritium cause me any harm? |
| |
The tritium on the
dials emits emits less than 925 MBq (25 mCi).
Coupled with Tritium having a very low penetration in air and
nearly nothing in glass or plastic, no radiation comes out of your
watch. |
| |
|
| |
4.6 Can I wear the watches while
swimming? |
| |
As with all vintage
watches, we recommend users not to go swimming while wearing the
watches. Though watches like the Navigators can be worn after
getting it pressure tested by a watchmaker. |
| |
|
| |
4.7 Can I wear the watches while
bathing? |
| |
Watches after being
pressure tested could be worn during bathing though we do not
recommend doing it. Acidic nature of soap may weaken the seal of
watches. |
| |
|
| |
4.8 Can I wear the Marathon
Navigators while diving? |
| |
Though the Navigators
have a water resistance rating of 6ATM, its ultimately a navigator
(pilot) watch. It may not be a good sign if pilots end up deep in
the water. Though feedbacks from divers gave it a pass for shallow
water diving, after getting it pressure tested by a watchmaker. |
| |
|
| |
4.9 Why do all military watches use
acrylic crystals? |
| |
Acrylic crystals have
shatter proof advantages. Making it a rugged material. And polishing
of acrylic crystals can be easily done at home. |
| |
|
| |
