It is said of Christiaan Huygens (the great Dutch astronomer and inventor of the application of the balance wheel to the timepiece) that around the mid-1600s he was forced to seek refuge on religious grounds in the more hospitable and tolerant surroundings of Switzerland, where he was to found a precision timepiece factory.

His became the watchmaker’s in the whole town of Geneva; in fact it was to turn into a meeting-place for the greatest craftsmen of his time, from as far a filed as England, Flanders, France and Italy, and together they came up with the finest “time machines” in Europe. Just before he died, the grand master summoned his best apprentice, one Edward Higgins, who hailed from the English city of Lancaster.

On his deathbed, Huygens revealed to Higgins the secrets of how to carry on the fortunes of the firms.

Thus it was that Higgins developed the watchmaker’s company into an Industrial outfit; the timepieces, until then exclusive to the rich nobility, was soon to become and indispensable instruments for the measurement of time, so much so that it was adopted officially by those paragons of timekeeping, the Swiss railways. Meanwhile, though, as time went by, for all his fame and fortune, homesickness was to prey upon Edward Higgins.

Making him miss his beloved hometown more and more; this is was that prompted him to call his watchmaker’s business “Lancaster”. The great merchants, bankers, and men from the great trades and professions of the time began to wear a Lancaster.

Which had come to symbolise outstanding technical and stylistic flair. Nearly 200 years have passed since then, but Higgins’ great tradition lives on in the Lancaster factories of today.
